What Determines the Cost? – Upholstery
When considering the purchase of a new piece of furniture, a common question is, “What determines the cost?” When buying a new item for your home, think of it as an investment, whether large or small. Don’t make the mistake of buying something less expensive just to “make do” because you will never be happy with it and will spend the whole time you own it thinking about its replacement. In this post we’ll talk about why quality home furnishings may have a higher price tag and why it is worth spending the extra money. This month we are focusing on upholstered furniture.
Reupholstering an Existing Piece
- If you are thinking about having a current piece reupholstered, the cost may be as much as buying a new piece. There are two cost factors to consider: fabric and labor. If the piece requires structural or cosmetic repairs or new cushions, it could become expensive. We usually recommend that, unless the item is a family heirloom or a newly acquired antique, it’s more cost effective in the long run to invest in a new piece.

Upholstered Furniture Construction
- Good qualities that will ensure your upholstered furniture selection is an investment and lasts for years are a hardwood frame with durable joinery and eight-way, hand-tied springs.

Upholstery Choices
- The textile or leather on your upholstered furniture is the main factor that determines the price of the piece. Textile prices are determined by where and how they are made, rather than by durability. For example, linen from Belgium is truly incomparable from the weave to the hand, but it is costly. In addition, there are fabulous upgrades, such as a contrasting welt that can add a striking detail to frame out the curves. Nail heads are no longer associated with stuffy, old, and dated decor because there are so many new applications and finishes. Premium wood finishes are a great detail whether just for the legs or for an exposed frame. You can have fun choosing finishes that will make your new piece of furniture truly unique.
