Current Design Projects – OBX Classics

Posted on October 3rd, 2018 by exoutlet.

Every month our blog will feature a design project our team has recently completed.  A single project can range from one or two rooms to a whole house, to a commercial project such as these hotel renovations!  Whether starting from scratch or incorporating existing elements, our designers study every detail and element in each space.  Exotic Home curates from many domestic artisans and combines it with our Global Imports collection to make each space an exclusive design.

This month we are featuring two iconic 1950’s era motels on the Outer Banks, NC. Designed by our two fabulous designers, Jordan Gutshall and Allison Howell, who are based out of our Kill Devil Hills, NC location. Jordan, an Outer Banks native, went to Meredith College and received her BS in Interior Design. Allison, originally from Richmond, VA, received her BFA in Interior Architecture. Together, this dream team designs and does everything from the grout to the fluffing of pillows. You don’t have to venture out anywhere else when they are working on a project!

The See Sea Motel  in Kill Devil Hills, NC, was completed in time for July 4th Weekend. The motel is not designed like a traditional motel. It was designed more like a village, and includes double queen rooms, king rooms with sleeper sofas and even a multi-family apartment! Every single room is different, so when you come back every year on vacation with your family you can stay in a different setting that meets your group’s needs. It’s definitely a destination with the fun colors and a youthful surfer vibe.

“Really pleased with the developers choice to restore and renew rather than demolished.” – Allison

“A lot of my friends had their grandparents stay there, it’s great to preserve it for the future.” – Jordan

The Tar Heel Motel in Nags Head, NC was reopened in time for the Memorial Day holiday. The Tar Heel Motel has been the go-to spot for sporting fisherman. Just a mile from Jeannette’s Pier, Pirates Cove and the Oregon Inlet Fishing center is nearby. Before, it was a very simple fishing lodge, but our dynamic duo wanted to design a retreat with a touch of classic Outer Banks nostalgia. The artwork is primarily seascapes and lighthouses; images that the guest are most familiar with and can relate to.

“…Keeping with the classic OBX character.” – Allison
