Is Your Furniture Making You Sick?
When starting to redesign your home it’s usually because you are sick of what you have. There could be multiple reasons that you want to seek out our designers; it could be the color of your drapes, the uncomfortable sofa, or the shape of your dining table. Choosing the right pieces for your home can seem like daunting task, but rushing could be costly! Could your furniture make you and your family sick?
Yes, your furniture could make you sick. There are several ways that toxins from your home terrorize your immune system without know knowing it until it is too late. Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society, said that formaldehyde is both worrisome and inescapable. “It’s the smell in new houses, and it’s in cosmetics like nail polish,” he said. “All a reasonable person can do is manage their exposure and decrease it to as little as possible. It’s everywhere.”
Since it is Autumn, burning of a nice candle while cozy up on the sofa with a nice book. Maybe you lit the candle because the sofa and coffee table smells? Masking scents seems like an easy solution, but that chemical smell is quite toxic. “Plywood, pressed wood, particle board, and medium density fiberboard (MDF). These products use glues that contain formaldehyde, and are commonly used in home construction and renovations, and to make ‘economy-grade’ furniture and cabinets.”
At Exotic Home Coastal Outlet we offer a whole range of Global Imports, as mentioned in this previous blog post. With our Global Imports your family is able to breathe comfortably and safely. Many of our pieces are antiques from all over the world, but we also have furniture that we have designed and made from 100% hardwood. Solid wood furniture contains no formaldehyde, and of course no VOC’s.
Being sick does not have to be an option. There are performance textiles on the market such as Crypton Home. According to Randy Rubin, CEO and founder of Crypton, “With its multi-patented processes, Crypton is leading the industry with performance textile solutions that are stain, water and bacteria-resistant. These ‘super fabrics’ are made with approved fabric constructions from licensed mills.” We have designed many spaces where Crypton Home is used on upholstery and pillows. There are more applications it can be used for such as tablecloths, placemats, and draperies. I mean, it’s bacteria-resistant!
Make the right decision and come to Exotic Home, where we not only care about design, but your family too!
