Cultural Significance
Our exclusive Global Import collection is the truly unique facet at Exotic Home Coastal Outlet. Our owners travel around the globe to find unique pieces to bring back. They focus on interesting and authentic finds from differing regions. One could say that our dynamic duo are like cultural anthropologists. Not only do they immerse themselves in foreign cultures making friends they consider family, but when they bring back pieces they truly understand the cultural significance that each piece manifests!
Due to the wave of inquiries about certain items we decided to address them in a very brief guide to help you navigate your next visit to Exotic Home Coastal Outlet. Grab your passport because in this week we are taking you to Indonesia!
Sarongs
Ikat dyed or hand batik sarongs are worn by both men and women in Indonesia. Men will typically wear plaid or checkered patterns while women wear flower motifs.
Our beautiful sarongs are made from the fibers of bamboo and while the patterns and colors are modern and vibrant, the ancient craft of batik printing is still used today.
Traditional colors and patterns come to life in our collection of rugs, pillows and napkins. Botanical dyes were used to create rich colors in designs worn for particular ceremonies and daily activities.
Phallus
In Indonesia the phallus is a symbol of harmony, balance, fertility and eternal life. The Hindu god Shiva is represented as such. In this part of the world, especially in the island of Bali, statues, murals, and shrines are created to Shiva. At Exotic Home Coastal Outlet we have carved bottle openers, key chains, and statues all handcrafted in Indonesia. To the artisans what they are making has more meaning than just a wooden phallus. They are honoring Shiva in the process of creating images that pertain to him.
Dewi Sri
The goddess of rice and fertility, Dewi Sri is a very important figure related to family prosperity and wealth. Highly revered throughout Indonesia, she is often depicted in carvings of wood, stone and bronze.
Ganesh
Son of Shiva. Ganesh is depicted with an elephant head and is the god associated with the removal of obstacles. There are two parts that are attributed to Ganesh in art; the elephant head to show his wisdom, and the potbelly to depict the bounty and nature. His hand is held out for blessing and protection on a person’s journey.
